Self Care for Women:
Mindful Cycles, Healthy Bodies, Clean Beauty

In this comprehensive class, herbalist, food entrepreneur, birth/postpartum doula, Laena McCarthy, will discuss healing traditions and practices to boost the female body's natural resilience while protecting from stress and damage, from the inside and out. The class will begin with an overview of what healthy self-care rituals look like, why taking care of your body is important, and how to heal and take care of your skin, body and cycles using simple herbs and ingredients from your pantry.

We’ll cover how a plant-based diet can be used for both physical and emotional health, how to choose herbs for cooking, teas and tonics, and how to work with the body's own natural cycles and rhythm to restore balance. We will discuss finding the right blend for your body: from your early 20’s to menopause.

The last 30 minutes of class, we’ll learn a simple exercise set, Laena's "daily 15 mend me minutes" of self-massage, stretching and breathing that can work wonders for maintaining physical and mental health, and prevent damage from stress and exhaustion.

Participants will learn about resources for herbs, oils and ingredients, and will take home a guide Laena's created with DIY herbal care, recipes for a healthy plant-based diet, and mindfulness exercises covered in the class, as well as a greater understanding of how to enhance their daily self care rituals, empowering them to take their physical, emotional and reproductive health into their own hands.

How to Meditate: An Introduction to Mindfulness

One of the best things I've ever done for myself was learning to meditate and create a daily mindfulness practice. Mindfulness Meditation helps me rebuff the jerk in my head who encourages me to make bad decisions; with a daily practice, I'm now able to sift through my thoughts so I'm (mostly) acting on the good ones, not the bad ones.

In this class, you'll learn the basics of starting a personal meditation practice. I'll teach you how to relax your mind, sharpen your concentration, increase calmness and clarity, and induce sustainable, conscious happiness. Most importantly, I'll provide you with tools to reduce stress and anxiety, and become more resilient.

This class is open to anyone who wants to learn more about mindfulness, whether you've meditated 100 times or 0. I'll address the basic barriers that many beginners face, such as: How long do I meditate? Where should I meditate? What do I focus on? How do I overcome distractions? The workshop will include some guided meditations and provide plenty of time for questions and discussion.

You will walk away with the ability to:

  • create a personal mindfulness meditation practice
  • reduce stress and increase calmness
  • train your mind to make better decisions
  • sleep better, and reduce physical pain or depression

    Herbal Tincture Making

In this comprehensive class, herbalist, food entrepreneur, birth/postpartum doula, Laena McCarthy, will teach you how to make both fresh and dried herbal medicine tinctures with the correct alcohol or vinegar percentages, creating a potent and long lasting remedy for a variety of common maladies.
